Riverdale Park Cleanup

April 2024

This April Cleanup was HNP Ontario's contribution to the annual Clean Toronto Together initiative.  Clean Toronto Together is a weekend in spring when schools, organizations, and Toronto residents come to pick up litter in the city's natural areas. The initiative began in 2004 and has since become the largest municipal cleanup in the country.

Thank you for joining HNP and our dedicated executive team for our bi-annual community cleanup! With a team of over 150+ volunteers, we successfully collected over 15 bags of trash from Riverdale Park! What a fantastic turnout, thank you!

Why Riverdale Park ?

Riverdale Park is located along the Don Valley Parkway and is a vast recreational area in Toronto. It is a very well-known sporting centre, with tennis courts, ball diamonds and all-purpose fields open to the public. Hundreds of people congregate on the hills to watch the beautiful sunset on the city skyline every night. Unfortunately, being close to a major road makes Riverdale Park susceptible to higher amounts of microplastics and ultrafine particles in the air. The city of Toronto has had air pollution concerns for a while, especially after the wildfires in 2023, which is why our Earth Day cleanups are SO IMPORTANT! Waste emits gasses and odour when it decomposes, so our efforts to remove garbage were just one step to maintaining the health of the environment and the community

Fun Fact: The green poles all around Riverdale Park East are actually pipes used to ventilate underground methane produced by waste. They are necessary because during the 1920's the park was a landfill!
